| Platonov leaves UW (Jon Willing) |

This is an archived story posted by Jon Willing. You can view the original
here. The university announced this afternoon that Vladimir Platonov, a math professor who pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in January, is leaving the university.
The announcement was made in a very brief release that said, "Platonov will be leaving the university as of August 31 to take early retirement."
In January, Platonov pleaded guilty to aggravated assault after he attacked his wife with a rock in November 1999. He was given a conditional sentence of two years less a day.
Although the university said that Platonov was "leaving" the university, there was some speculation that the university was ready to release Platonov in response to his conviction. It has been about 17 years since a faculty member was dismissed because of criminal convictions. In 1983, Leo Johnson lost his job when he went to prison for sexual offences involving children.
Until today, Platonov had been suspended with pay while the university conducted an internal inquiry.

two: will he still be permitted to teach, advise, etc. as many other retired profs do?

I'm disappointed at the lack of flowey quotes from Dave and/or Amit and/or Alan. :)
Also, the Pure Math department still has him listed as faculty on their web page. And he still has his email account.

I say this Platonov is an arragant prick with a lot of money and lawyers. I wonder if he would like to catch a rock with his face? Crucify him, not the school. [ Parent ]

Here's their latest article on the situation with Prof. Platonov.
