University of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener are exploring the possibility of locating a School of Pharmacy in downtown Kitchener, Provost Amit Chakma informed Senators in an e-mail today.
Chakma wrote:
"The possibility of establishing a School of Pharmacy at Waterloo has been a discussion item at Senate Long Range Planning for several months. Dean [of Science] George Dixon has constituted an academic working group, chaired by Professor Terry MacMahon, Chair of Chemistry, to work on curriculum development and other academic matters. In addition to curriculum, government approval and resource related issues will also need to be addressed."
Chakma stressed that the discussions are at the "very early exploratory stage." The matter is on the agenda of the City of Kitchener 9 February 2004 Council meeting.

Jesse,
I am excited at the possibility of adding a School of Pharmacy at UW. In my opinion, a long term goal of UW's should be to have a Medical School with a teaching hospital on the North Campus. Operating both a School of Pharmacy and a School of Optometry is a huge step in the direction of fulfilling that vision.
Having considered this proposal the one thing that still stands in the way of my full support is the possibility that an addition of another satelite campus could contribute to the disconnect that is already felt in Student Life at UW. I feel that the construction of a satellite campus in Downtown Kitchener and a new residence there will result in the first steps of "U of T Syndrome" where campus' are spread all over town.
While the deal looks pretty, I think that we need to examine the long-term effects of fragmenting our campus to a third city. Granted, this may be one way to get the GRT to finally move their butts on providing a good deal for students (we won't bring a campus downtown unless you find a feasible solution for student transportation... I think it might happen pretty quickly) but will the addition of another campus in another city further disenfranchise the sense of Student Life that exists at Waterloo? (however small or large that feeling may be)
I think this is where the BoG and the Senate are going to face the question of whether to promote expansion and funding for select programs/faculties that create an elite air of academia (ie. the programs that pull that 99th percentile people to UW), along with cutting under-enrolled programs (ie. the ones that don't) in order to have the money to fund these massive construction and expansion efforts. While a move downtown would likely be cheaper, I would like to see a proposal for the School of Pharmacy on North Campus instead of Kitchener so that I could compare the two. What might be more expensive now, could be the right decision in 10 years.
