Only English and French posters in U of T student elections

Ryan Kennedy of University of Toronto's The Varsity writes:

Candidates for the upcoming Students' Administrative Council (SAC) election are going to have to watch their language on any campaign posters-or at least watch what language they use.

The SAC elections committee has banned all foreign languages from campaign posters, with only French and English, Canada's official languages, making the cut.

The article contains comments from candidate Justin Woong Kim and from current Students' Administrative Council VP Operations Alexandra Artful-Dodger.

A bit much

That's a bit much, but I understand where it's coming from.

I'd prefer if the rule said that all wording on a sign has to be in English in at least as large a font as the foreign language. (You might have a problem in that you can't verify that they say the same things)

I don't like the idea of limiting anyone's freedom of expression, but since speaking English is a requirement of attended university here, I think that's fair.

Decision Reconsidered
Authored by: Alex on Tuesday, March 02 2004 @ 08:57 PM CST
Hello, what the article didn't read was that before the campaign period began, Justin kim asked the Committee if we could amend that part of the code, and we did. Foreign language posters are now allowed.

However, they were not allowed from Friday until Tuesday, as I and the Chief Returning Officer did not have the power to overturn the rule. We had to try and get quorum together at the Elections Committee to make any changes to the code. This happened today. Big fuss -little story.

Best regards,
Alexandra Artful-Dodger

Learn the languages
Authored by: Bautista on Friday, March 12 2004 @ 12:51 PM CST
This is Canada, not hong kong or pakistan. If ppl have a problem with the two Languages of Canada, go back to where you came from where you can speak your shit all the time.
Otherwise, learn the languages or keep your foreign mouths shut.
