A memo was recently sent out from the Dean of Environmental Studies with the following message.
========================================================================
MEMORANDUM
TO: All Faculty and Staff of ES
FROM: Geoff McBoyle, Dean of Environmental Studies
TOPIC: Possible move of Architecture to Engineering
DATE: March 5, 2004
___________________________________________________
Colleagues,
There has been discussion to take the School of Architecture out of the Faculty of Environmental Studies and place it in the Faculty of Engineering.
The process will be the following: regular faculty members of the School of Architecture will vote on the issue within the next two weeks.
If the vote is overwhelming, the Vice President (Academic) and Provost will move the process to the next step which will occur probably before fall 2004.
Geoff

The full ramifications of this vote are unclear. If the School of Architecture does join Engineering, is the Faculty of Environmental Studies still a viable Faculty?
One FES faculty member speculated that AHS and FES could be merged to create a new Faculty of Environment and Health Sciences. With increasing budget pressures on UW, and the potential for tapping into new research monies this may end up being a good economic move for UW.
