The third building in UW's research and technology park will have a green roof and will house a business accelerator centre as well as providing office space for other tenants.
In addition to the accelerator centre described as the "anchor tenant," business law firm, Miller Thomson, has announced that it will set up an office in the building.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the building was held indoors on rainy Friday afternoon in the first R+T Park building, iAnywhere Solutions, a subsidiary of Sybase. The second building in the park is under construction and will house Open Text.Corporation.
One of the architects, Laird Robertson from RHL, said that the three-storey building was designed with sustainability and environmentally sensitivity in mind, he referred to the tree that will be planted as part of a green roof.
The first floor of the building will house an accelerator centre that is intended to help new technology companies to develop. The press release described some of the services the centre will provide.
It is intended that the Accelerator Centre, approximately 22,700 square feet, will provide a broad range of services, at below market rental rates, including IP management consultation, mentoring, access to professional service providers, community networking events and investor matchmaking with innovators.
UW President David Johnston commented on the accelerator centre. "This is more than just bricks and mortar. I can't wait to see young people have their horizon's broadened and go on to do great things," he said.
