Greyhound to challenge Feds in transport hearing

Feds and Greyhound will face-off next week in front of a provincial transport board over the operation of the Fedbus.

The hearing by the Ontario Highway Transport Board will decide whether Federation of Students can continue to operate its bus service to Toronto, Hamilton, and London on weekends.

"They [Greyhound] want us out of the bus service," Feds President John Andersen said, "I'm trying to protect the Fedbus."

Andersen said that the hearing stems from a complaint to the board from Greyhound and follows informal meetings between Greyhound and Feds last fall.

According to Andersen the dispute is about whether under the law Fedbus is "scheduled service" or "chartered trip." The difference between them is based on how the timetable of service works and how fares for the bus are paid.

Also named in the hearing is Ayr Coach Lines Limited the bus service that Feds used for Fedbus. Ayr Coach Lines and Greyhound Canada and Greyhound Canada Transportation Corp. are both licensed under the Public Vehicles Act.

The hearing will be held at 10:30 on Thursday 30 March at Kitchener City Hall.
